Lawrence Schiller
American producer, photographer, and 'interviewer-investigator' who collaborated with Mailer on Marilyn, The Executioner's Song, and Oswald's Tale; he secured access and conducted much of the field research for the last.
Lawrence “Larry” Schiller, the American producer and packager, was Mailer’s recurring “skilled and wily colleague in interview and investigation.” He brought Mailer the Gary Gilmore material behind The Executioner’s Song (79.14) and had earlier worked with him on Marilyn (73.30). For Oswald’s Tale (95.16) the two “labored side by side in Minsk and Moscow, and then again in Dallas” for six months in 1992–93, Schiller securing the access to Soviet files and witnesses that made the book possible — Mailer’s “American Tolstoy” partnership, as Schiller later called it. Schiller would direct the 2000 television film of The Executioner’s Song and collaborate again with Mailer.
