Saturday Review
American literary weekly (founded 1924 as The Saturday Review of Literature) that gave Mailer his first magazine cover story on 8 May 1948, paired with Maxwell Geismar's review of The Naked and the Dead.
The Saturday Review of 8 May 1948 was “the first magazine to give Mailer a cover story,” featuring a Hal McIntosh drawing of Mailer based on the NAD jacket photograph. The issue paired “The Author” (48.3), a short article-interview by “R.G.,” with Maxwell Geismar’s laudatory review.
The Saturday Review would host further Mailer-related material across the following decades (its annual Pulitzer Prize poll in April 1949 recorded several critics’ NAD nominations, per Lennon 48.2). Norman Cousins, then Saturday Review’s editor, was one of three major reviewers who did not list NAD among the top books of 1948.
