Commentary
New York–based monthly of opinion, culture, and Jewish American letters; published by the American Jewish Committee since its founding in 1945. Mailer's first appearance is "Responses and Reactions I" in the December 1962 issue (62.22) — the inaugural installment of a bi-monthly Commentary column on Martin Buber's Tales of the Hasidim that runs through October 1963 (six installments total: 62.22, 63.16, 63.17, 63.18, 63.19, 63.20).
Commentary — founded by the American Jewish Committee in November 1945 under editor Elliot E. Cohen, taken over by Norman Podhoretz in 1960 — was, by 1962, one of the leading American intellectual monthlies. Mailer’s first appearance is “Responses and Reactions I” (62.22) in the December 1962 issue, pp. 504–6 — the inaugural installment of a bi-monthly column of the same name running from December 1962 through October 1963, devoted mainly to commentary on Martin Buber’s Tales of the Hasidim (62.22, 63.16, 63.17, 63.18, 63.19, 63.20 — six installments). Partial reprint in The Presidential Papers (63.37) and in 98.7. The Mailer–Podhoretz friendship of the period (Podhoretz being one of Mailer’s earliest serious critics, the Partisan Review “Embattled Vision” essay of 1959) makes Commentary a natural venue for the column.
