American editor, a founder of the New York Review of Books and longtime editorial director at Random House; he became Mailer's editor when Mailer moved to Random House in 1983, and remained so through the rest of his career.
Jason Epstein, the editorial director at Random House and a co-founder of the New York Review of Books, became Mailer’s editor when Mailer left Little, Brown for Random House in August 1983. Announcing the move, Epstein said Mailer’s first Random House book would be “a major contemporary novel” — an early hint of Tough Guys Don’t Dance (84.17). He remained Mailer’s editor for the rest of his career.
