Norman Mailer: Works and Days

Bibliography 1962

The year of Mailer’s third marriage (to Lady Jeanne Campbell, 4 May 1962) and the move into 142 Columbia Heights; of Deaths for the Ladies, his first book of poems; of the Edinburgh International Writers’ Conference (20–24 August); of the Mailer–Buckley Chicago debate (22 September) and the Patterson–Liston I press-conference encounters (25–29 September); and of the simultaneous launch of two parallel columns — The Big Bite in Esquire (November 1962 – December 1963, fourteen monthly installments) and Responses and Reactions in Commentary (December 1962 – October 1963, six bi-monthly installments). Thirty-one entries in all: seventeen by, two interview, three article-interview, nine article, and (per the Works register’s silence) no about rows — Diana Trilling’s important 1962 essay “The Radical Moralism of Norman Mailer” is queued for verification before inclusion.
